Pampers vs Huggies – Which is Better?

The age-old debate of “Pampers vs Huggies” is one of the great battles of our time, akin to Jacob vs Edward or “Can you wear white after Labor Day?” It is something that many parents feel extremely passionate about any want to explain why their choice is better. The reason we compare Pampers vs Huggies instead of some other brand is because they are the most similar out of the basic diaper brands. This isn’t the case all over the world. For some countries, like Canada, Pampers is by the far the preferred brand and they actually use the brand name as the overarching word for diapers. Pampers also has a slightly bigger market share than Huggies, but both are doing very well.

Still, there is a basis for comparison between the two brands and there are things that make one better for certain people. In order to figure out which one is better for you, you have to pick what is important.

Product Offerings: Pampers vs Huggies

Both Pampers and Huggies brands offer diapers as well as other types of baby products, including wipes and bibs. However, the main focus for both lines is on diapers.

Pampers have quite a few different lines of diapers, though they aren’t all available everywhere. For newborns, and infants, they have two different types, Swaddlers and Baby Dry. The sizes run down to preemie with even smaller ones available in hospitals. Once your child starts to move around more, Cruisers are the overwhelming favorite for toddlers though you can also get Baby Dry. For older children, there are training Pampers called Easy Ups that help your child get used to the feel of underwear. The largest size available in a size 7 for Cruisers and Underjams. Underjams are for children up to 85 pounds who have trouble with bedwetting. They will keep the sheets dry throughout the night. Here’s a general breakdown of their sizing, though there is some difference between the lines, so always check the packaging:

8-14 lbs (4-6 kg) Size 1
12-18 lbs (5-8 kg) Size 1-2
12-18 lbs (5-8 kg) Size 2
16-28 lbs (7-13 kg) Size 3
22-37 lbs (10-17 kg) Size 4
27+ lbs (12+ kg) Size 5
35+ lbs (16+ kg) Size 6

For Huggies brand diapers, you have six different options. They too start at the preemie size and newborns, going up to ten pounds in their Little Snugglers brand. Once your child starts to move, you can switch to the Little Movers brand which is one of the more comfortable options for babies that have chubbier thighs. Another kind, Snug & Dry, have LeakLock technology to help keep moisture in, making them the diapers of choice for travel. Huggies also has a bedwetting option called Overnites. Of course, the well-known Pull-Ups brand helps with potty training. For those who are environmentally conscious, the Pure & Natural brand is a fantastic option.

Quality: Pampers vs Huggies

You can really see a difference between the two brands when you compare Pampers vs Huggies on the quality category. Of course, they are going to be available in similar sizes, but here is where the winner starts to emerge.

Pampers feels more like an old-fashioned diaper on the outside. It is made of softer material and straps that stay put because they are akin to Velcro. As far as the absorbency goes, Pampers tends not to leak and the inside of the diaper feels drier to the touch compared to Huggies. The diaper also doesn’t “look” wet because of the design. There is an indicator on the diaper that alerts you to wetness. This is great for parents who have babies with sensitive skin. The one downfall is for children to tend to have blowouts, as the fabric isn’t as easy to wipe off, meaning your hands may get a little dirty.

Note that there was some controversy about Pampers giving children chemical burns, but according to the United States government, none of that as confirmed and there haven’t been any cases since that isolated incident.

Huggies, on the other hand, tends to be a bit cheaper feeling on the inside and the outside. The material feels like plastic and looks like it to, making it very obvious that your child has a full diaper without even looking at the included indication strip. Inside, the material doesn’t do as good of a job at pulling away the moisture from the skin, but if you change your child regularly it shouldn’t be a problem. The sticky strips are typically fine unless you are trying to use them up when your child gets to the borderline of sizes. If they are even a little bit too tight, they won’t grab correctly. This is a downfall because Huggies, unlike Pampers, do not work well when you open up the sticky strip and then reattach it. One stick and its pretty much over.

Availability

Both Huggies and Pampers are available all over the world and in more big box stores that people frequent. You can get them both in over fifty countries, including North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Huggies are available in South Africa as well.

As for the individual stores, you can get them at Target, Walmart, Babies ‘R Us, Toys ‘R Us, CVS, Walgreens, and Kmart. You cannot purchase Pampers at Costco, but you can get Huggies there.

Both brands are available in comparable sizes at these stores- you can get packs with only a few or bigger boxes that will last you for a month or longer. Of course, stores like BJs, Sam’s Club, and Costco will get you bigger boxes than a Target will get you.

Those aren’t the only stores where Huggies and Pampers are available, but they are the most common places to look. You can also pick them up at grocery stores, gas stations, and even boutique baby stores.

For parents who don’t like to shop in stores, both products are available on Amazon and for delivery from the aforementioned stores.

Price of Pampers vs. Huggies

For many parents, pricing is what draws them to a certain type of diaper. You have to find the proper balance between cost and quality. Most people won’t buy the ‘generic’ brand diapers because they leak or don’t work as well and frankly, it isn’t worth it.

Which one costs less tends to depend on which line you want to purchase. For example, Pampers almost always tends to run a little cheaper than Huggies, but you can find coupons for Huggies more easily, which evens out the price quite a bit. The only difference is if you go to Target, where you can find both items on Cartwheel quite often. For example, there are currently coupons for both Pampers and Huggies on the app and they are the same amount off – between $0.50 and $3.

If you don’t like cutting coupons, Pampers is the more affordable option.

At the end of the day, everyone is going to have different opinions on what is the better brand between Pampers and Huggies. A lot of it really depends on your parenting style and how often you change your child’s diaper, what you feed your child, and even how you child’s hips align. The best option is to try out both and make the call for yourself. Know that the preferred brand may change as your child ages as well or just based on the price point. There’s no shame in shopping for sales, just make sure you get a good product as well.
